HERSTORY

The idea of having a Deaf Lesbian Festival (DLF) was originated at the Deaf Women United (DWU) conference in Rochester in 1997. There were several special interest groups during the conference and one was for Deaf Lesbians. We discussed what the women wished to see and one of them was a gathering.

In 1998, Marilyn Smith of Seattle, Washington made it a reality. She hosted the first festival. It was such a success that one was hosted in Provincetown, Massachusett in 2000. Washington, DC then hosted one in 2004 (there was nothing in 2002 because of the Deaf Way II). Austin, Texas then hosted one in 2006. Then San Francisco, California hosted in 2008. Long Island, New York then hosted in 2010. Chicago, Illniois then hosted one in 2012. In 2014, the DLF will take place in Phoenix, Arizona. Further on, in 2016, it will be in Vancouver, Canada.

All these festivals were successful and European Deaf Lesbians wanted to organize such an event in Europe, calling it the INTERNATIONAL DEAF LESBIAN FESTIVAL (IDLF), with the idea of gathering European Deaf Lesbians, as well as others from all over the world. The first one was thus held in 2011 in Dublin, Ireland. The next one is about to take place in Brussels, Belgium in 2013!

So let's create more herstory...
